Citronella oil is a natural insect repellant, especially for mosquitoes. The oils from the plant are used to make lotions, sprays and candles. In some studies citronella-based repellents have been found to be as effective as DEET.
EUCALYPTUS ~ CITRIODORA ~ LEMONGRASS:
A potent natural repellent extracted from the leaves of lemon eucalyptus trees. Discovered in the 1960s during mass screenings of plants used in Chinese traditional medicine, this essential oil, comprising 85% citronellal, is used by cosmetic industries due to its fresh smell. However, it was discovered that the waste distillate remaining after hydro-distillation of the essential oil was far more effective at repelling mosquitoes than the essential oil itself. Many plant extracts and oils repel mosquitoes, with their effect lasting from several minutes to several hours.
A 2016 study found that the efficacy of Eucalyptus (Citriodora) combined with Lemongrass falls third in line, behind DEET and picaridin. It is the only natural repellent that is registered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for effectiveness and human safety.
Studies have found that Clove Essential Oil is active against mosquitoes. Clove essential oil, along with other essential oils, was tested for mosquito repellent properties in a 2004 study reported in the “Journal of Medical Entomology.” Pure undiluted clove essential oil worked against several varieties of mosquitoes, repelling them for 2 to 4 hours, according to an article published by the University of Wisconsin.
** On the other hand, DEET has been shown to harm brain and nervous system function. Children are particularly at risk for subtle neurological changes because their skin more readily absorbs chemicals in the environment, and chemicals exert more potent effects on their developing nervous systems.
